How to Change Your X (Twitter) Email to Proton Mail

Secure your X account by switching to an encrypted, private email provider.

    March 2026 · 5 min read

Your email address on X (formerly Twitter) is used for login, password resets, and security alerts. Moving to Proton Mail ensures these critical communications are protected by end-to-end encryption and can't be read by your email provider.

This guide walks you through changing your X email address to Proton Mail, step by step.

Before you start: Make sure you have a Proton Mail account ready. If not, create one here. Verify you can send and receive emails before proceeding.

Step 1: Navigate to Account Settings

    1. Open the X app or go to x.com
    2. Tap your profile iconSettings and SupportSettings and privacy
    3. Go to Your accountAccount information
    4. You may be prompted to enter your password to continue
    5. Tap Email to see your current email address

Step 2: Update Your Email Address

    1. Tap Update email address
    2. Enter your Proton Mail address in the email field
    3. Tap Next or Done
    4. X will send a verification email to your Proton Mail inbox

Tip: X may ask you to verify with your password or a code sent to your current email. Keep your old email accessible until the switch is complete.

Step 3: Verify Your Proton Mail Address

    1. Open Proton Mail at mail.proton.me
    2. Find the verification email from X (check spam if needed)
    3. Click the verification link to confirm
    4. Return to X and confirm your new email is now active

Important: Your email change isn't complete until you click the verification link. If you don't verify within a few hours, you may need to restart the process.

    Step 4: Secure Your Account

    • Enable Two-Factor Authentication — Go to Settings → Security and account access → Security → Two-factor authentication. Use an authenticator app like Proton Authenticator.
    • Review connected apps — Settings → Security and account access → Apps and sessions. Revoke access for anything suspicious.
    • Check active sessions — Review where you're logged in and log out of unknown devices.
    • Use a strong unique password — Generate one with Proton Pass.
