Your email address on X (formerly Twitter) is used for login, password resets, and security alerts. Moving to Proton Mail ensures these critical communications are protected by end-to-end encryption and can't be read by your email provider.
This guide walks you through changing your X email address to Proton Mail, step by step.
Before you start: Make sure you have a Proton Mail account ready. If not, create one here. Verify you can send and receive emails before proceeding.
Step 1: Navigate to Account Settings
- Open the X app or go to x.com
- Tap your profile icon → Settings and Support → Settings and privacy
- Go to Your account → Account information
- You may be prompted to enter your password to continue
- Tap Email to see your current email address
Step 2: Update Your Email Address
- Tap Update email address
- Enter your Proton Mail address in the email field
- Tap Next or Done
- X will send a verification email to your Proton Mail inbox
Tip: X may ask you to verify with your password or a code sent to your current email. Keep your old email accessible until the switch is complete.
Step 3: Verify Your Proton Mail Address
- Open Proton Mail at mail.proton.me
- Find the verification email from X (check spam if needed)
- Click the verification link to confirm
- Return to X and confirm your new email is now active
Important: Your email change isn't complete until you click the verification link. If you don't verify within a few hours, you may need to restart the process.
Step 4: Secure Your Account
- Enable Two-Factor Authentication — Go to Settings → Security and account access → Security → Two-factor authentication. Use an authenticator app like Proton Authenticator.
- Review connected apps — Settings → Security and account access → Apps and sessions. Revoke access for anything suspicious.
- Check active sessions — Review where you're logged in and log out of unknown devices.
- Use a strong unique password — Generate one with Proton Pass.
