How to Change Your Social Media Email to Proton Mail

Protect every social media account by switching to a secure, encrypted email address — works for any platform.

    March 2026 · 6 min read

Your email address is the master key to every social media account — it's used for login, password resets, and security notifications. By switching to Proton Mail, you ensure these critical messages are protected by end-to-end encryption and can't be read by your email provider.

This guide provides universal steps that work across all major social media platforms. While exact menu names vary, the process is fundamentally the same everywhere: add your Proton email, verify it, set it as primary, then remove the old one.

Before you start: Make sure you have a Proton Mail account ready. If not, create one here. Verify you can send and receive emails before proceeding.

Step 1: Find Your Account Email Settings

Every social media platform stores your email address in its account or security settings. Here's how to find it on the most popular platforms:

    1. Facebook / Instagram: Settings → Accounts Center → Personal details → Contact info
    2. X (Twitter): Settings → Your account → Account information → Email
    3. LinkedIn: Settings → Sign in & security → Email addresses
    4. TikTok: Settings → Manage account → Email
    5. Snapchat: Settings → Email (under My Account)
    6. YouTube / Google: myaccount.google.com → Personal info → Contact info → Email
    7. Reddit: Settings → Account → Email address
    8. Discord: User Settings → My Account → Email
    9. Pinterest: Settings → Account management → Email address

Tip: If you can't find email settings, search your platform's help center for "change email address" — every major service has a documented process.

Step 2: Add Your Proton Mail Address

    1. In your platform's email settings, look for "Add email", "Change email", or "Add new contact"
    2. Enter your Proton Mail address (e.g., yourname@proton.me or yourname@protonmail.com)
    3. You may need to enter your account password to confirm the change
    4. Some platforms send a verification code or confirmation link to your new email

Important: Don't remove your old email until your Proton Mail address is fully verified. This prevents getting locked out of your account.

Step 3: Verify Your Proton Mail Address

    1. Open Proton Mail at mail.proton.me
    2. Look for a verification email from the social media platform
    3. Click the confirmation link or copy the verification code
    4. Return to the platform and enter the code if required
    5. Your Proton Mail address should now appear as confirmed or verified

Tip: Check your Proton Mail spam/junk folder if you don't see the verification email within a few minutes.

Step 4: Set Proton Mail as Primary & Remove Old Email

    1. Once verified, go back to your email settings
    2. Select your Proton Mail address and choose "Set as primary" or "Make primary"
    3. After confirming primary status, select your old email and choose "Remove" or "Delete"
    4. Confirm the removal when prompted

All future notifications, password resets, and security alerts from this platform will now go to your encrypted Proton Mail inbox.

Note: Some platforms (like Meta's Accounts Center) manage email across multiple linked services. Changing your email on Facebook may also update Instagram if they share contact info.

    Step 5: Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Now that your email is secure, lock down the account with 2FA. Most platforms support these methods:

    1. Go to your platform's Security or Login & security settings
    2. Find Two-factor authentication and enable it
    3. Choose an authenticator app (recommended) — we suggest Proton Authenticator
    4. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app
    5. Save your backup codes in a secure location (e.g., Proton Drive)
    6. Avoid using SMS-based 2FA if an authenticator app is available — SMS can be intercepted via SIM swapping

Tip: Use Proton Pass to generate and store strong, unique passwords for every social media account.

Step 6: Review Active Sessions & Connected Apps

    1. Check Active sessions or Where you're logged in in your security settings
    2. Log out of any sessions you don't recognise
    3. Review Connected apps or Third-party access and revoke permissions for apps you no longer use
    4. Review Login alerts or Unrecognized login notifications — enable them if available

This is a good opportunity to audit all your social media accounts. Consider repeating this process for every platform you use.
