How to Change Your Facebook Email to Proton Mail

Protect your Facebook account by switching to a secure, encrypted email address.

Your Facebook email is the gateway to your account — it's used for login, password resets, and security alerts. By switching to Proton Mail, you ensure these critical messages are protected by end-to-end encryption and can't be scanned or read by your email provider.

This guide walks you through updating your Facebook email to Proton Mail using Meta's Accounts Center, which manages email settings for both Facebook and Instagram.

Before you start: Make sure you have a Proton Mail account ready. If not, create one here. Verify you can send and receive emails before proceeding.

    Step 1: Open Accounts Center

    1. Go to facebook.com or open the Facebook app
    2. Click your profile photoSettings & privacySettings
    3. In the left sidebar, click Accounts Center (or navigate to it under Meta Accounts Center)
    4. Click Personal details
    5. Under Contact info, click Add a new contact or tap your current email

Tip: Meta Accounts Center manages contact info for all linked accounts (Facebook + Instagram). Changing your email here can update both if they share the same contact info.

Step 2: Add and Verify Your Proton Mail Address

    1. Click Add new email address
    2. Enter your Proton Mail address
    3. Enter your Facebook password to confirm
    4. Facebook will send a confirmation code to your Proton Mail inbox
    5. Open Proton Mail at mail.proton.me
    6. Find the code and enter it back in Facebook

Important: Don't remove your old email until your Proton Mail address is fully verified. This prevents getting locked out.

Step 3: Set as Primary and Remove Old Email

    1. Return to Accounts Center → Personal details → Contact info
    2. Click your Proton Mail address and select Make primary
    3. Click your old email address and select Remove
    4. Confirm the removal when prompted

All future Facebook notifications, password resets, and security alerts will now go to your encrypted Proton Mail inbox.

    Step 4: Secure Your Account

    • Enable Two-Factor Authentication — Accounts Center → Password and security → Two-factor authentication. Use an authenticator app like Proton Authenticator.
    • Review login activity — Accounts Center → Password and security → Where you're logged in. Remove sessions you don't recognize.
    • Check connected apps — Settings → Apps and Websites. Remove apps you no longer use.
    • Set a strong unique password — Use Proton Pass to generate and store a strong password.
